Space Yoga Studio - A Festive Day in the Life

Space Yoga Studio - A Festive Day in the Life

14th Dec 2021

SPACE YOGA STUDIO

Space Yoga Studio can be found within the HOMECO store on Bucks Rd in the centre of Douglas. It’s a beautifully tranquil space to practice yoga, meditation, Tai Chi and there is even a rope wall for the spinal rejuvenation yoga classes which are unique to the SPACE Yoga Studio.

My name is Dee, and I have spent the past 12 years running the HOMECO store with my husband, previously known as BEDCO and was a part time yoga teacher in my free time at the Karma Yoga Studio. Last year when we all went into the first lockdown, HOMECO had to close like many businesses; I could not work, so decided to spend lockdown zooming yoga classes to my regular students, to friends and family. It helped them survive and it helped me survive!

What started out fairly low key, grew into a much bigger offering as people started sharing with friends and family around the world. It was an incredible experience and led to the vision of creating the yoga studio SPACE with classes every day of the week in a physical studio, but also with the option of Zoom.

So here’s a day in my life, no day is the same…..

6.00 - 7.30AM

I often wake really early despite wishing I could sleep for 8 hours straight! I used to hate early mornings, but I love my early mornings now before everyone gets up. It’s a quiet time and I can take some time for myself especially as I now work most evenings teaching yoga.

I have recently qualified as an Instinctive Meditation teacher so I will start most days with a meditation before I get up; it’s a great way to start the day and I love this approach because it’s easy and fun. It’s taken me years to find a way to enjoy meditation and I hope to share this style once I’m qualified in January.

Then it’s time for tea in bed whilst catching up on messages and emails from family, friends and students.

7.30 - 9.30AM

I will usually go for a walk, a quick circuit up to Douglas Head with a dip in the sea at Port Skillion. I have been following Wim Hof’s work for the past 2 years and love the benefits of cold water immersion; great for the body and the mind. Only if the sea is too rough will I skip the dip and would replace it with a cold shower instead.

I live above HOMECO and the SPACE studio so it’s a short walk down the stairs to prep the studio; heaters and lights go on and candles are lit to create a cosy and warm room with a calm and soothing atmosphere for the yoga classes that day.

9.30 - 11.30AM

Students will arrive for classes so I will go down a little beforehand to welcome them into the studio, have a chat to hear what’s going on in their lives and then teach a Gentle Flow class on a Monday, Rope Yoga on a Wednesday and Laura teaches Tai Chi on Fridays. There’s a regular group of people who attend these classes so it’s always nice to see their faces in the studio.

11.30 - 1.00 PM

If I’m not teaching a private session, I will head back upstairs to do all the admin that is required for running the studio, replying to emails, planning new workshops and retreats and liaising with the graphic designer to create new social media posts.

There’s always something to do and it’s a great way to be creative, thinking of new ideas, workshops, retreats etc. Here are some of the retreats we have planned for 2022. They have been incredibly popular with the difficulties of travel throughout the pandemic.

New Year is always a great time to start the year with good resolutions for keeping well physically and mentally so this is a great time to offer new courses and ideas.

This January I will be offering our first ever Intro to Meditation Course starting on 9th January @ 5.15pm which will also be offered on Zoom for those who cannot make it into the studio. This is a totally unique approach to meditation, it’s fun and busts a lot of the myths surrounding meditation.

In addition we will also offer an Intro to SPACE Course for beginners and for those wishing to return to yoga after a break starting on 9th January @ 11.30am one of the latest creative projects is creating the new SPACE Christmas Gifts.

Last year we offered our unique SPACE branded water bottles and tote bags with our gift vouchers.

This year we have a luxury SPACE journal beautifully gift wrapped and ready to go.

1.00 - 5.00 PM

As I teach every day and most evenings I will use my afternoons to catch up with people, whether that be a teacher, friend or looking after my two grandchildren or maybe run errands.

For the past 12 months I have been training to become a meditation teacher so I have spent a lot of time studying, attending classes and practicing online with the training school and other students. I hope to qualify in January and will be offering courses for people to learn meditation in the studio, one to one sessions and corporate meditation courses. The style of meditation is very different from anything I have done in the past and people love it.

5.00 - 8.00 PM

Time to prepare for the evening classes which are run every day Monday to Friday with a mixture of Flow, Yin, Ropes and Tai Chi.

All of our classes are suitable for beginners and more practiced yoga students. We have a great team of brilliant teachers who care deeply about our students; Jess Bryan, Janette Alexander, Celine Courmont, Kath Murphy and Laura Smith.

Once all the classes are over, it’s time to blow out the candles, turn off all the lights, lock the door and head up for a bite to eat and put my feet up followed by a relaxing bath with some epsom salts and essential oils, then into bed ready for sleep…..
